Course Description

Moisture, if left unaddressed, can lead to deterioration of the roofing components and eventual failure of the roofing system.  Trapped moisture can also affect the health and well-being of the building occupants. This presentation will cover the theory of moisture migration in buildings and identify various sources of moisture occurring in different types of buildings located in different climates. Tactics to employ during construction and recommended approaches to roofing system design to eliminate potential risk of moisture damage will be discussed. Architects, contractors, roofing materials manufacturers, roofing consultants and building inspectors will greatly benefit from this presentation.

  • Baseline understanding of building physic
  • Familiarity with roof inspection process

Learning Objectives
1. Identify moisture sources resulting from products used, practices during construction or climatic conditions.
2. Explain the theory of moisture migration and how moisture can infiltrate a roofing assembly.
3. Explain the difference between moisture resulting from construction practices and that is generated by the building occupants.
4. Discuss roofing assembly design approaches to reduce the risk of moisture infiltration.
5. Recognize tactics that counter moisture generated during construction.
