Hands-on training, emerging technology and expanded networking opportunities will give trade show attendees a look at what is next for the metal construction industry. 

METALCON is preparing to celebrate its 35th anniversary with a show focused on both recognizing the industry’s foundation and exploring where metal construction is headed next. On this episode of MetalCast™, host Karen Edwards spoke with Judy Geller, vice president of trade shows for PSMJ Resources and METALCON show director, about what attendees can expect October 7-9, 2026, at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida. 

Judy described the direction of this year’s event, saying, “It is our 35th anniversary, which is a very exciting milestone. But this is not a retrospective.” That forward-looking approach will extend throughout the show floor, education sessions and networking opportunities. 

Among the new additions is Forge, an expanded evolution of the Metal and Mimosas program for women in metal construction. Taking place Tuesday, October 6, the half-day program will feature speakers, panelists and networking, followed by a reception sponsored by National Women in Roofing (NWIR). Explaining why the program expanded, Judy said, “It was just getting too small. We needed to give it some breathing room and we had a lot of demand for it.” 

Education will remain a major focus, with more than 35 sessions planned in the exhibit hall alongside approximately 263 exhibitors. A new Contractor Business Success Center will focus on helping contractors add metal to their businesses and grow their operations, while the Training Zone and Metal Mastery Clinics will offer additional learning opportunities. 

Technology will also take center stage as automation, artificial intelligence and digital workflows become increasingly practical tools for contractors. Reflecting on that shift, Judy said, “I think attendees are going to see on the show floor and in the education how technology has really evolved from this, theory to practical automation, artificial intelligence, digital workflows.” 

Other highlights include a U.S. Steel activation recognizing its 125th anniversary, a live 480-square-foot tiny house build by FrameCat and its partners, keynote presentations from Jim Abbott and Kermit Baker, speed networking, a contractor reception, a future leaders happy hour and recognition of the inaugural 40 Under 40 group.

Three professionals from Montgomery Winslow Roofing were also named recipients: Jami Woolston, a sales and marketing specialist, Brad Woolston and John Woolston, the owner. Montgomery Winslow Roofing is a roofing company located in Fort Myers, Florida. 

While each winner brings a different role and company perspective to the event, they will share access to an environment centered on education, innovation and industry connection. METALCON gives contractors and other professionals an opportunity to step beyond their daily responsibilities, learn from peers and consider new approaches they can apply to their businesses, projects and careers. Through conversations with exhibitors, thought leaders and fellow attendees, the winners can discover ideas and potential solutions while building relationships across the trades.

The Metal Roofing Alliance (MRA) is heading to Orlando for METALCON 2026, bringing education, hands-on training and industry conversations focused on the future of residential metal roofing. 

The featured session, “Residential Metal Roofing – The Sustainable Choice,” will examine why sustainability has become an important consideration across residential, commercial and institutional construction. Scheduled for Thursday, October 8, from 1:15 to 2:15 p.m., the presentation will explore how metal roofing can support environmental goals, energy efficiency, low maintenance requirements and long-term value. 

MRA Executive Director Renee Ramey will present alongside Melissa Dunson, vice president of sales at Central States; Brian Smallwood, marketing manager for construction at Steel Dynamics Inc.; Mitch Heitsch, director of sales at Westlake Royal Building Products; and Lauren Rogers, global sustainability manager for the Sherwin-Williams Coil and Extrusion team.  

These experts bring a wealth of experience in metal manufacturing as well as marketing and communications to the conversation. Their expertise will help attendees define sustainability and better understand why it matters to homeowners. The session will cover recycled content, end-of-life recyclability and environmental benefits related to solar, water catchment and heating and cooling cost savings. 

Attendees will also learn how metal roofing performs during extreme weather, including hail, high winds and hurricanes. The program is designed to help professionals clearly communicate metal roofing’s sustainable attributes to homeowners, building owners, developers, architects and facility managers. 

Beyond the classroom, attendees can visit the MRA and Metal Construction Association Metal Mastery Clinics for installation-focused education. These hands-on clinics will share best practices for standing seam systems, metal shingles and retrofit applications.

Labor pressures, durability concerns and long-term performance goals are prompting developers and building owners to look more closely at metal construction. 

Metal construction is expanding beyond the warehouses, manufacturing facilities and agricultural buildings with which it has traditionally been associated. As a METALCON blog post recently noted, as developers and building owners face tighter schedules, workforce shortages, rising insurance costs and greater expectations for sustainability and resilience, metal is gaining consideration across commercial, institutional, residential and mixed-use projects. 

One factor driving that shift is speed. Engineered metal building systems and prefabricated components can reduce on-site labor requirements and streamline installation. For developers, shorter construction schedules can support earlier occupancy, faster revenue generation and stronger project economics. 

Resilience is also becoming a larger part of project planning. Owners increasingly expect buildings to protect assets and perform in the long term as extreme weather events and insurance costs create additional pressure. Modern metal roofing, wall and structural systems are designed with durability in mind and can help address concerns involving fire, wind, moisture and enduring performance. 

Sustainability adds another dimension. Metal roofing’s recyclability, durability and long service life can support environmental goals while helping reduce waste and replacement cycles. These considerations are becoming closely connected with operational efficiency, investor expectations and long-term asset value. 

Flexibility may be equally important as developers consider how buildings will function years into the future. Metal building systems can accommodate expansion, equipment upgrades, tenant improvements and changing operational needs, helping owners extend the lifespan of their facilities. 

These factors are changing the way projects are evaluated. Instead of focusing only on upfront construction costs, developers are increasingly considering lifecycle value, adaptability, resilience and operating performance. METALCON is celebrating its 35th anniversary with special exhibits, networking events, industry awards and community celebrations!  

2026 marks 35 years of METALCON – the leading event for metal construction professionals. And this year’s show has a variety of special events planned to both celebrate this milestone and help professionals across the industry prepare for another 35 years of shaping the metal industry’s future. Here’s a shortlist of the events to expect from this year’s show, which is planned for October 7-9, 2026, at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida!  

Steel on the Move Experience 

METALCON isn’t the only one celebrating an anniversary this year, U.S. Steel is celebrating 125 years of innovation in 2026! And to honor it, they have created a special Steel on the Move Experience that is coming to the METALCON show.  

This exhibit is an immersive experience that showcases “the story of steel and its essential role in building the infrastructure, products and communities that power everyday life.” It will be located at the center of the exhibit hall, making it easy for all attendees to stop by and explore the engaging displays, interactive content and inspiring stories.

The 2026 METALCON Top Product Awards 

The annual product awards are back — this is its sixth year! These awards celebrate the innovative products, technologies and solutions that exhibitors at METALCON bring to the table. And the results are decided by YOU!  

So, make sure you fill out your voting form as you explore the expo floor (which will host more than 250 booths this year!). Voting ends on October 7, 2026, at 5 p.m. ET with announcements of the winners hosted at the show October 8, 2026, at 2:30 p.m.

Forge: Where women in metal shape what’s next 

This is the only event on this list that is separately ticketed (meaning you need to register for it in addition to your general METALCON registration), but it’s well worth the time and the $35 ticket!   

Hosted the day before the METALCON show kicks off, the Forge centers around the incredible female professionals who are pushing the metal industry forward. It offers everyone from emerging professionals to industry veterans a chance to sit in a room of women who understand exactly what you do and how hard you’ve worked to get where you are today. 

Attendees can look forward to a keynote from Rita Goodroe; a panel discussion featuring Bryce Batts, Kate Glantz, Erin Hoffman and Amanda Turner; networking activities and a reception sponsored by National Women in Roofing (NWIR). This is a must-attend for those looking for meaningful conversation, leadership insights and genuine connections that extend well beyond METALCON.

Oktoberfest 

METALCON is all about bringing learning, fun and community together and no event is better representative of this than their Oktoberfest expo experience! The event officially kicks off on Wednesday, October 7 at The Backyard with a golf simulator challenge sponsored by HELIX Metalforming and John Stortz & Son. The rest of the celebration will happen at various exhibitor booths across the expo floor.

Speed networking 

With all the education sessions and other events happening, it can be hard to find time for spur-of-the-moment networking, which is why METALCON has set up a speed networking event for Wednesday night (10/7/2026). This is a huge opportunity to “meet contractors, manufacturers, architects, fabricators, suppliers and industry leaders through short, structured conversations designed to spark real relationships and business opportunities.
