Experts explore why siding has become an attractive growth market for roofing contractors and how training programs are removing barriers to entry.

As markets remain competitive and differentiation becomes more important, many contractors are looking for ways to expand their offerings. Why? Not only do diverse offerings create multiple paths of income for a business, having a wide portfolio can help you stand out to home and business owners!

One of the easiest ways for roofers in particular to expand their offerings is to add siding. To learn about why this is a good market for roofing contractors to expand into and to explore the different training opportunities available to help get your crew up to speed in a new market, we hosted Josh Wilens, Alex Birnbaum and Kristina Hill on an episode of Coffee Conversations all about how “siding is becoming a key part of how contractors build stronger customer relationships and grow project value.”

Siding is a great opportunity for roofers. Not only does it allow you to present yourself as a complete exterior solution provider, but it is also a fun challenge for your crew. Kristina reflected on the process of adding siding into her business, HomeShield Roofing & Exteriors:

Siding has been a bit of a pain point for us with finding good team members that fit the way that we like to do things. We've fired many subcontractors because of quality of product, ability to take feedback, etc. But we keep at it not just because it’s a great market opportunity but when you can find team members to add in your pocket that do things the way you do, it is such a fun thing.

And one of the best ways to create those teams that make expansion more than just a logistical choice is to train them. Alex, who is a senior director at QXO explained, “The biggest barrier that we see is people don't get into siding because they're concerned about learning how to do installation or finding that reliable team.”

In response to this pattern, QXO has made it a priority to make comprehensive training programs available to contractors all over the country. Josh explained, “This year alone we've run four trainings focused on siding at various hot markets around the country with one of our vinyl suppliers. And the way we developed these trainings is to be helpful for all audiences. We’re focused on expanding awareness and making sure that everyone feels confident, whether that’s an in-house crew or a subcontracting one.”

The result of these trainings? Attendees leave with more than just product knowledge, they leave with hands-on experience and a familiarity with the product that gives them the confidence they need to start installing siding in the field. In other words, they become those ideal crews that Kristina noted help make the expansion of siding not just a good business prospect but a fun challenge.

When a Southern California camp serving children with cancer needed some help, nearly 70 roofing professionals joined forces to deliver five brand new cabin roofs.

On August 18, 2026, roofing professionals gathered at Camp Ronald McDonald for Good Times in Southern California to install new roofs on five of the camp’s 14 cabins. The work was made possible by volunteers who contributed their time and professional expertise, along with companies that provided the labor and materials needed to complete the installations. Participating companies included Antis Roofing and Waterproofing, Gabella Construction, GAF, Howard and Sons Inc., QXO and Shell Roofing Solutions.

About the camp

The project helped protect a place where children with cancer can step away from hospitals and treatments and spend time simply enjoying being kids. As described on their website: 

Camp programs provide children with cancer and families the opportunity to pause, connect with others who are facing similar challenges, and renew a sense of hope. We help youth build courage and independence, and experience a sense of belonging in a healing, medically safe environment. Learn which program is right for you.

About the project

Together, the participating professionals addressed more than one-third of the camp’s cabins in a single day. Their contributions supported the camp’s ability to continue providing children with a special place to get away from the medical environments that are often part of their daily lives.

The project continued the longstanding partnership between Ronald McDonald House and the Roofing Alliance. Since 2017, Roofing Alliance and National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) members have donated millions of dollars in roofing materials and labor to assist Ronald McDonald House programs across the country.

Reflecting and looking forward

For contractors, manufacturers, distributors and other roofing professionals, efforts like this show how industry knowledge can serve communities beyond the jobsite. Every volunteer and participating company played a role in protecting the facilities that help make the camp experience possible.

This day of service represented the roofing industry at its best: Professionals coming together, sharing their talents and making a meaningful difference for children and their families.

West brings an extensive track record of high-impact operational leadership and driving major business transformations.

QXO, Inc. today announced the appointment of Ken West as president and chief operating officer, effective September 1, 2026. West will report to chief executive officer Brad Jacobs and be responsible for QXO’s day-to-day operations.

West brings an extensive track record of high-impact operational leadership and driving major business transformations. He joins QXO from Honeywell Technologies, where he most recently served as president and chief executive officer of Honeywell Process Technology, which holds the leading global position in process technology. West has more than 20 years of experience leading large, complex industrial businesses across operations, strategy, finance and integration. He was responsible for the acquisition of Johnson Matthey’s Catalyst Technologies business and spearheaded its integration.

West joined Honeywell in 2018 and rose to lead three major business segments within six years. Prior to leading Honeywell Process Technology, he served as president and chief executive officer of the company’s Energy and Sustainability Solutions segment, president and chief executive officer of Honeywell UOP and president of Honeywell Advanced Materials. In his most recent role, West helped shape Process Technology into a more growth-oriented business, including the spin-off of the independent company now known as Solstice Advanced Materials. He also led the acquisition of Sundyne and oversaw its integration with Honeywell’s automation and digital platforms.

Before Honeywell, West spent 13 years at PPG Industries, where he served as global vice president of Packaging Coatings and held leadership roles in operations, integration, corporate planning and finance. During his tenure, West led the integration of AkzoNobel Architectural Coatings North America, establishing PPG as the world’s largest coatings company.

West earned an MBA from Carnegie Mellon University’s Tepper School of Business and a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Purdue University.

August 18 marks a major roofing event for Southern California Roofing Alliance and Camp Ronald McDonald for Good Times in Mountain Center, California. The event includes five live-action roof installations onsite, while mariachi music and a festive fish taco luncheon by Wahoo’s Fish Tacos take place below.

This is the third big event for the Southern California team since the first took place in 2017. The second one occurred in 2021. This year, Antis Roofing, Shell Roofing, QXO, GAF, Howard and Sons and Gabella lead the charge.

The partnership will continue its service for RMHC roofing as needs arise, adding it to other philanthropic commitments that each partner has in its own community.

Nearly a decade of providing new roofs for one of America’s most beloved charities

The Roofing Alliance was the first collaborative roof donation effort dedicated to a national nonprofit. Antis Roofing and several other Roofing Alliance members stepped up and committed to installing new roofs, or repairing existing roofs, for all 165 Ronald McDonald Houses across the US in 2017. They undertook the first collaborative roof maintenance project for RMHC in 2017, with a particular focus on Camp Ronald McDonald for Good Times.

Alumni camper Monet will be attending the August 18 event. She started out as a camper and is now on staff as the camp’s social media manager.
