Is Metal Roofing a Regional Thing?

My feelings are that metal roofing may be a regional thing?  I live in Southern California where metal roofing is rare and you need a different license to install (I think, it may have changed, I should check).  But nationally I think it's far more popular.  If you DON'T do metal roofing, why?
